Audit log
The audit log is a permanent record of important actions in your workspace. Use it to answer "who did what, and when?"
What is recorded
- Sign-ins and failed sign-ins, and two-step verification changes
- Invitations created, resent and revoked
- Role changes, deactivations, reactivations, resets, and sign-outs
- Channel creation, changes, archiving, members added or removed, and permanent deletion
- Messages deleted by an admin
- File downloads and file removals
- Settings changes
- Actions by the CM Chat team that touch your workspace
Message text is not in the log. Entries record who, what, which item, when, the country, and the address they connected from. Addresses and details are stored encrypted.
Read it
- Open Audit log in the admin console.
- Entries are newest first. Times are shown in your local time.
- Click Load older events to go further back. Each row shows Action, Who, Target, When and country.
Filter
Use the filters at the top:
- Event type: for example a role change or a file download.
- Who did it: the person who acted.
- Target id: the id of the person (starts with
u_) or channel (starts withc_) it was done to.
Verify integrity
CM Chat can check that the log is complete and has not been altered.
- Click Verify integrity.
- CM Chat re-checks every entry.
- You see Intact., or Integrity problem. with the entry where the problem starts. If it reports a break, email hello@cmchat.app straight away.
The log is append-only: admins can review it, but entries cannot be edited from inside the workspace.
