Integrations: webhooks and bots

Integrations let other tools post into CM Chat, and let CM Chat send new messages to other tools. They accept Slack-style messages, so a tool that posted to Slack usually needs only a new address.

Open Integrations in the left menu of the admin console.

Only owners and admins can manage integrations, after confirming it's you. Everything is recorded in the audit log.

Bots

A bot is the name an integration posts under. Give each connected tool its own bot so you can turn it off separately.

  1. Open Bots.
  2. Type a New bot name, optionally an Emoji avatar (optional).
  3. Click Create bot.

Deleting a bot (Delete bot and revoke its tokens) stops all of its tokens and webhooks.

Incoming webhooks

An incoming webhook posts into one channel.

  1. Open Incoming webhooks.
  2. Enter a Name and pick the Channel.
  3. Optionally tick Allow @channel and @here (otherwise they are removed) and Let the sender choose its display name and emoji.
  4. Click Create webhook.
  5. Copy the Webhook URL. It is shown once. In the other tool, replace the Slack webhook address with this one.

Use Rotate if the address may have leaked (the old one stops working), or Revoke to turn it off. The address contains a secret, so share it only privately.

Slack formatting, blocks and attachments are converted for you. Links are made safe, and @channel/@here from outside are removed unless you allowed them.

Bot tokens

For tools that use Slack's chat.postMessage call with a token instead of a webhook.

  1. Open Bot tokens.
  2. Pick the Bot, give the Token name, and choose the Channel it may post to.
  3. Click Create token. Copy the token (shown once) and send it as Authorization: Bearer ....

Rotate replaces a token; Revoke turns it off.

Outgoing webhooks

Send each new message in a channel to another system.

  1. Open Outgoing webhooks.
  2. Enter a Name, the Channel, and an HTTPS URL. Only secure addresses on port 443 are allowed. Private and internal addresses are refused.
  3. Click Create outgoing webhook.
  4. Copy the Signing secret (shown once). The receiving system uses it to check that a request really came from CM Chat.
  5. Click Send test to try it.

Messages are sent only while the person who set up the webhook can still read the channel. A webhook that fails 25 times in a row is turned off. Replace secret gives a new secret.

Delivery log

Delivery log shows every message that came in or went out, with the result and the sender's country. Filter by Type (Incoming webhooks, Bot tokens, Outgoing) or Problems only. Times are shown in your local time. Entries are kept for 30 days and never contain message text.

Moving from Slack

To bring over your Slack history, see Importing from Slack. Importing from Mattermost is not available yet.
