Channels (admin)
Open Channels in the admin console. You can search and filter by type (public or private) and by archived status.
The list includes private channels, so you can manage them. You can see who is in a channel, but this page never shows messages. Direct messages are counted but never listed.
Edit name or topic
Click a channel. Under Name and topic, change them and click Save changes.
Manage members
- Click the channel.
- To add: use Add people by name or email, pick people (including guests), and click Add.
- To remove: click Remove beside a name and confirm.
A removed person loses access to the channel and its files immediately.
Archive and unarchive
Archiving puts a channel away without losing anything.
- Click the channel and choose Archive channel, then confirm. Archived channels become read-only for everyone.
- To bring it back, filter by Archived, open it, and choose Unarchive.
Notification default
Alert channels, such as one that receives messages from a bot, are easy to miss if people only get notified about mentions. To change that:
- Click the channel.
- Under Notifications, set Notify members about to All messages.
People who left their own choice for the channel on Use default now get a notification for every message. Anyone can still pick their own level for the channel, and that choice wins. Mentions (default) removes the channel default, so each person's own settings apply. The change is recorded in the audit log.
Delete permanently (owner only)
Deleting a channel is permanent and cannot be undone.
- Click the channel. In the Danger zone, click Delete this channel (then Delete channel).
- In Permanently delete, type the channel name to confirm.
- Click Delete forever.
- Confirm it's you if asked.
What "permanently" means: the channel's messages and files are made unreadable, and the stored data is then removed.
One thing to know: the deleted data in backups made before the deletion cannot be read, and those backups themselves expire on their normal schedule.
If you only want to hide a channel, archive it instead.
