Using CM Chat
Direct and group messages
A direct message (DM) is a private conversation between you and one other person. A group message is a private conversation with more than one other person.
Start a direct message
- In the left sidebar, click New message in the sidebar (under Direct messages).
- Type a name and click the person.
- Click Open.
- Type your message at the bottom and press Enter.
If you already had a conversation with that person, CM Chat opens it instead of starting a second one.
Start a group message
- Click New message.
- Pick 2 to 8 people. Together with you, a group can have up to 9 people.
- Click Open.
Opening the same group of people later brings you back to the same conversation.
Things to know
- Only the people in the conversation can see it.
- You cannot add people to an existing group message. Start a new one with the people you want.
- DMs have no channel name. They show the names of the people in them.
- Guests can message only people who share a channel with them.
- Admins cannot read your DMs through the admin console. DMs are counted but never listed there. Like all CM Chat messages, they are not end-to-end encrypted; see the Security overview.
