Using CM Chat
Files and images
Send a file
- In the message box, click Attach files, or drag a file onto the chat (a Drop files to attach box appears).
- Pick the file. It uploads and appears below the box.
- Add text if you like and press Enter.
The file is attached only when you send the message. An upload that is not attached within 24 hours is deleted automatically.
Limits
- The biggest file is set by your admin. The default is 50 MB. If yours is rejected as too large, ask an admin.
- Profile pictures can be png, jpeg or webp, up to 5 MB.
- Images (png, jpeg, gif, webp) show in the chat. Other files, like PDFs and documents, download.
Who can see a file
Only people who can read the channel or conversation where you shared it. If someone is removed from the channel or deactivated, they can no longer open the file. Workspace admins can see a list of files and remove them (see Admin: Files).
Files are encrypted while stored. See the Security overview.
Download links expire
Download links are made fresh each time and stop working after about 10 minutes. That is on purpose: a link copied from CM Chat cannot be used later or by someone else.
- If a download says the link has expired, reload the chat and click the file again.
- Do not share a copied download link. Instead, share the message or channel with the person.
- Every file download is recorded in the audit log.
Delete a file
Delete the message it is attached to. The file is removed with it.
