Using CM Chat
Guests
A guest is an outside person, such as a client, invited to take part in specific channels only.
What a guest can do
- Read and write in the channels they were added to.
- Send direct messages to people who share a channel with them.
- Share files in their channels and search those channels.
- Use their own profile and devices screens.
What a guest cannot do
- See any channel they were not added to. Other channels, public or private, are invisible to them.
- Browse the list of channels.
- Create channels or add people.
- See the whole list of people. A guest sees only people who share a channel with them.
- Use the admin console.
Shorter sign-in time
Guests are signed out sooner than members. By default, 12 hours without use or 7 days in total. A guest may also have an end date: after that day the account stops working. An admin can change the end date.
If you are a guest
You accept an invitation and sign in like everyone else, with the code we email you. A second step (a passkey or authenticator app) is optional unless the workspace owner requires it. See Accepting an invitation.
If you are an admin
See Admin: Invitations to invite a guest and Admin: People to change their end date. Only admins can add a guest to a channel.
