Getting started with CM Chat

CM Chat is secure team messaging. You talk with your team in channels, in direct messages, and in threads. You can share files and search what was said.

Your workspace address

Every team has its own address, like yourteam.cmchat.app. Your admin gives you this address in your invitation email. Your team's messages live only at that address. Another team's address cannot see yours.

Bookmark your address. You will use it every time you sign in.

First time here

  1. Open the invitation email from your admin.
  2. Follow Accepting an invitation.
  3. Optional: set up a passkey or authenticator app. You need one if your workspace requires a second step, or to do admin tasks.

After that, you are in. CM Chat opens in your web browser. There is nothing to download, but you can install it as an app (below).

Install CM Chat as an app

CM Chat is a "progressive web app" (PWA). That means your browser can install it so it opens in its own window with its own icon. It still uses your workspace address.

On a computer (Chrome or Edge)

  1. Open your workspace address and sign in.
  2. Look at the right end of the address bar. Click the Install icon (a small screen with a down arrow).
  3. Click Install.
  4. CM Chat opens in its own window. You will also find it in your Start menu or Applications folder.

If you do not see the icon, open the browser menu (three dots) and choose Install CM Chat or Save and share, then Install page as app. Menu names vary a little between browser versions.

On an iPhone or iPad (Safari)

  1. Open your workspace address in Safari and sign in.
  2. Tap the Share button (a square with an arrow up).
  3. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
  4. Tap Add.

On an Android phone (Chrome)

  1. Open your workspace address in Chrome and sign in.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu.
  3. Tap Install app (or Add to Home screen).
  4. Tap Install.

Android users can also use the dedicated app. See The Android app.

Good to know

  • Times are shown in your local time.
  • Your admin controls how long you stay signed in. See Devices and sessions.
  • CM Chat only works from the countries your admin allows. The default is the United States. If you travel and cannot sign in, ask your admin.
  • Browser notifications can be turned on in Preferences. See Notifications.
