Using CM Chat · Step 6 of 6
Signing in on a new device
On a new phone or computer, open your team's address, type your email, and enter the 8-digit code we email you. That is all you need: no passkey or app is required unless your workspace owner has turned on a second step.
Use this page when that does not work, or when the screen asks for a passkey you do not have there.
Check the workspace first
Every sign-in screen shows the Workspace name and its address, for example "Image Depot, imagedepot.cmchat.app". Your email address only works in the workspace you were invited to.
- If the sign-in page shows a different workspace name from the one you expect, you are on the wrong address. Go to your team's own address, such as
yourteam.cmchat.app. - If you do not know your address, tap Not the right workspace? to find it, or look in your invitation email.
- For safety, CM Chat never says whether an email address has an account. A wrong address looks the same as a right one. If no code arrives after a minute, check the workspace address and try the email you were invited with.
In the Android app
- Tap the three dots at the top of the screen to open the menu.
- Tap Switch workspace.
- Choose a workspace under Recent workspaces, or type the address in Workspace address.
- Tap Continue.
In the desktop app
Press Ctrl+Shift+W, or open the CM Chat menu and click Switch workspace.
If you are paused
After too many wrong tries, sign-in pauses for a while. The screen says how long. The pause only applies to sign-in for that one workspace, not your other workspaces. Wait for the time shown, then try again.
When "Confirm it's you" asks for a passkey you do not have here
You only see "Confirm it's you" if your workspace owner requires a second step (or you are an admin in a workspace that requires passkeys for admins). Passkeys stay on the device or password manager where you created them. A passkey from your Windows PC is not on your phone. On the phone you can:
- Type the 6-digit code under Authenticator app code, then tap Verify code.
- Or tap Use a recovery code, type one of the codes you saved, and tap Sign in with recovery code. Each code works once.
Optional: a passkey or authenticator app
These are optional. A passkey lets you sign in without waiting for an email, admins use one to confirm admin actions, and you need one on each device if your workspace requires a second step. Set it up once, on a device where you are already signed in.
Option 1: an authenticator app
- Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then Settings, then Security.
- Under Authenticator app, click Set up.
- Scan the QR code with an authenticator app on your phone, type the 6-digit code, and confirm.
Option 2: a passkey on your phone
- Open Settings, then Security.
- Under "Faster sign-in and admin access (optional)", click Add a passkey on your phone.
- Type a name, such as "My phone", and click Create passkey.
- When the browser asks, choose Use a phone or tablet. A QR code appears.
- Scan it with your phone's camera and approve with your fingerprint, face or PIN. Keep Bluetooth on, because the phone and computer check that they are close together.
The passkey is created on the phone and never leaves it. It still needs your fingerprint, face or PIN, so this is as safe as a passkey made on the computer.
