Using CM Chat

Using several workspaces

If you belong to more than one team on CM Chat, you can keep them all open as tabs and switch between them in one click. Each workspace is still separate: its own sign-in, its own settings and its own notifications.

What you see

Once you are signed in to two or more workspaces on a device, a column of workspace tiles appears on the far left (on a phone, it slides out with the channel list). Each tile shows the workspace's initials. The current workspace has a green marker. A red number means mentions or direct messages are waiting there, and a small dot means other unread messages.

Hover over a tile to see the workspace's name.

Add a workspace

  1. Click the + under the tiles. (With only one workspace there is no column yet: click the workspace name at the top of the sidebar, then Add a workspace….)
  2. Type the workspace address, for example acme or acme.cmchat.app, or paste an invitation link.
  3. Click Continue. Sign in as you normally would. The workspace joins your tabs as soon as you are signed in.

An invitation link works the same way, even while you are signed in to another workspace: accept it and the new workspace appears as a tab.

Your list of workspaces is kept on this device only. CM Chat does not keep a list of the other workspaces you use, and no workspace can see which others you belong to.

Switch

  • Click a tile.
  • Press Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+9 (Cmd on a Mac) to jump to the first to ninth tile. In some browsers these keys belong to the browser's own tabs; the installed app and the quick switcher always work.
  • Press Ctrl+Shift+[ or Ctrl+Shift+] to go to the previous or next workspace.
  • Press Ctrl+K and type the workspace name.

You come back to the channel you were last in.

Reorder

Drag a tile up or down. On a keyboard, focus a tile and press Alt+Shift+Up or Alt+Shift+Down. The order is saved on this device.

The tile menu

Right-click a tile, or press and hold on a phone:

  • Mark all as read for that workspace.
  • Notification settings opens that workspace's notification settings.
  • Sign out of this workspace ends only that sign-in. The tile stays, with a lock, so you can sign back in.
  • Sign out of all workspaces ends every sign-in on this device.
  • Leave this workspace… see below.
  • Remove from this device forgets a tile you are signed out of.
  • Move up and Move down.

Notifications

Each workspace has its own notification settings, quiet hours and do-not-disturb. Notifications say which workspace they come from, and clicking one opens that workspace on the right channel. Your browser asks permission for notifications once for each workspace address, so turn them on in each workspace's Preferences.

Leave a workspace

Open Settings, then Workspaces, and use Leave this workspace. Type the workspace address to confirm. Your account in that workspace is turned off, you are signed out, and the tile and the saved data on this device are removed. Your earlier messages stay with the workspace, and an admin can invite you again. Your other workspaces are not affected. The only owner of a workspace has to make someone else an owner first.

If an admin removes you from a workspace, its tile disappears the next time CM Chat checks, and the saved data for it is cleared from this device.

Good to know

  • Each workspace follows its own rules, such as how long you stay signed in and which countries can reach it.
  • Signing out of one workspace never signs you out of another, unless you choose Sign out of all workspaces.
  • In the Android and Windows apps, other workspaces open inside the app too.
